The Institute of Molecular Biology (IMB) is the leading national research institution in the area of molecular and cellular biology and biochemistry.

Bulgaria has joined EMBO and EMBL as a prospect member state.

EMBL welcomes Bulgaria as a new prospect member state, starting a three-year process toward full membership.
“We are very pleased to welcome Bulgaria as a prospect member state, recognising its strengths in areas such as molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics, environmental sciences, among others,” said EMBL Director General Edith Heard. “We share our excitement about the power of molecular biology in addressing global challenges and look forward to exchanging knowledge, ideas, and talent with our Bulgarian colleagues.”

Research Activity

The structure of the IMB includes seven research sections that work in three main directions:

Epigenetic control mechanisms

Genomic stability

Research with high application potential

Scientific indicators for 2023

56

publications

245.5

total impact factor

The distribution of published scientific works by journal ranks from Thompson Reuters Web of Science/Scopus is no less eloquent about the quality of the conducted research activity:  Q1 are 42% of publications. Another 15% were in Q2, 14% in Q3 and 10% in Q4.

Technological development

The Center for Modern Microscopy at the Institute of Molecular Biology, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences is part of the Euro-BioImaging consortium, a large-scale pan-European research infrastructure project of which Bulgaria is one of the founders.

AEGIS-IMB ERA Chair project

Since 2023, the Institute is implementing the AEGIS-IMB ERA Chair project with the main objective to develop  its traditionally strong focus on epigenetics and chromatin biology towards a world-class level of research excellence.
